Better Scientific Software (BSSw) is a community hub for sharing best practices in scientific software development, and home to the Better Scientific Software Fellowship Program — a partnership among DOE ASCR, NNSA, and NSF.
- BSSw.io: A resource of articles, blog posts, and training materials covering better planning, development, performance, reliability, collaboration, and skills for scientific software — published over 40 new articles in FY2025 alone, with contributions from over 345 people.
- BSSw Fellowship Program: Recognizes individuals advancing developer productivity and software sustainability. The program has recognized 38 BSSw Fellows and 38 Honorable Mentions across cohorts from 2018–2025, with a 2026 cohort of 6 Fellows and 6 Honorable Mentions recently selected.
- Established by IDEAS-ECP: The Fellowship Program traces back to the IDEAS-ECP Project, carrying forward its mission of improving software productivity and sustainability practices.
PESO’s role in BSSw. PESO leads the BSSw.io website and leads the Better Scientific Software Fellowship Program. PESO members also lead the CASS Workforce Working Group, which advances leadership and career paths in next-generation computing sciences, and coordinated recognition of Fellowship cohorts at US-RSE conferences through a memo of understanding with the US Research Software Engineer Association.
